German Sterling Propelling Pencil, c.1920

This sterling silver propelling pencil was made in Germany and reflects an early form of the mechanical pencil we know today. Like a modern mechanical pencil, it is designed to hold and dispense pencil lead from within its body.

The top cap opens to accommodate 1.15mm lead, allowing the pencil to be refilled and used repeatedly. Propelling pencils were developed as a more portable and practical alternative to the traditional wooden pencil. Over time, their mechanisms evolved into the mechanical pencils and multi-function writing instruments we use today.

What is particularly interesting about pieces like this is that they were not designed solely as desk stationery. Compact and portable, many were intended to be carried in a pocket or attached to a chain. This example retains a small loop to the top cap, allowing it to be worn or adapted with a necklace, tassel or charm. Although no formal hallmarks are present, the body is stamped [GERMANY / STERLING].

Both a practical writing instrument and a small personal accessory, it is a charming example of how everyday objects were once designed to be carried, used and enjoyed as part of one's personal belongings.

All vintage objects carry natural signs of use and traces of time accumulated over the years. This pair has received an initial polish using silver cleaner, while its naturally developed patina has been carefully preserved rather than excessively removed. To preserve the beauty and longevity of the pieces, frequent or excessive use of silver cleaner is not recommended. When not in use, please store them away from prolonged exposure to air. When needed, gently polish with a soft silver polishing cloth.
