Ebony Oval Tray

Ebony has long been valued for far more than its distinctive black colouring. Deep in tone, exceptionally dense in grain and capable of taking on a beautiful, subtle sheen when polished, it became one of the most prized timbers in European cabinetmaking and decorative arts. Introduced to Europe from the 16th century onwards, ebony was never an everyday material. Its rarity and difficulty to work with made it a natural choice for furniture and objects intended for royal and aristocratic interiors.

Ebony was particularly striking in the cabinets and decorative furniture of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Its almost-black surface provided a dramatic contrast against lighter timbers, metalwork and intricate inlay, allowing the finest details of a piece to stand out. Even when used more sparingly, ebony brought a sense of depth, quiet luxury and restraint to an interior. Its appeal continued well into the 19th century, when it was often chosen for smaller objects such as boxes, jewellery cases and writing accessories, where the beauty of the material and quality of finish could be appreciated at close hand.

This oval tray is a quietly beautiful example of ebony used in a more intimate, everyday form. With little need for ornament, its deep, dark tone, smooth surface and softly curved silhouette give it an understated presence. It is practical enough to hold smaller belongings, yet has the character of an object that feels equally at home left completely empty, allowing the richness of the timber and simplicity of its form to take centre stage.

Placed on a dressing table, it would make an elegant setting for perfume bottles and jewellery, while on a console or side table it could sit beautifully beneath a candlestick or alongside a small collection of decorative objects. Its character shifts subtly depending on what it holds, but the quiet depth of the ebony remains at its centre.

There is something particularly appealing about an object that does not need to announce itself. Here, good material, considered proportions and a beautifully restrained form are enough to alter the atmosphere of a space. With time, the surface of the ebony develops an even greater depth and character, revealing new nuances in the light. Vintage wooden objects naturally acquire variations in colour, grain and surface character as they age. This piece has undergone an initial wood polishing treatment, while the natural patina, texture and signs of use accumulated over time have been carefully retained rather than overly restored.

To help preserve the beauty and condition of the timber, occasional oil polishing is recommended. Please avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and excessive moisture.

As is characteristic of an object that has lived through many years, there are natural signs of age and gentle wear throughout. At either end of the tray, where the curved sections meet, there are slight openings in the joints caused by the natural movement, shrinkage and subtle deformation of the timber over time. These are considered natural signs of ageing in a wooden antique and form part of the character acquired through its history.
