Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Jar, c.1900
Antique English stoneware jars were made as practical household vessels rather than decorative objects, and would have been used regularly in kitchens and pantries. They were often used to store everyday provisions such as jam and other small foodstuffs, with the durability of stoneware allowing them to remain part of the household for many years.
This piece is a Doulton & Co. stoneware jar, made at Lambeth in London and dating to around 1900. Doulton was one of Britain’s leading stoneware manufacturers throughout the 19th century, producing a wide range of practical household wares as well as more decorative pieces at its Lambeth works. With its simple and functional form, this jar offers a quiet glimpse into the everyday objects once found in British homes.
The “DOULTON & CO. LIMITED LAMBETH” mark remains visible on the lower body of the jar. More than simply identifying the maker, this small detail places the piece within the long history of Doulton’s Lambeth production and its tradition of making stoneware for everyday use.
Original lids are often missing from antique stoneware jars, having been lost or discarded over the years, while some examples were originally made without lids. This example retains its original lid, preserving the form and character of the jar as it would have been used as a storage vessel.
Today, it could still be used to hold small household items, or simply enjoyed as a practical piece of antique stoneware. It would sit naturally in a kitchen, pantry or study, whether used to keep small objects together or displayed as part of a collection.

𓉞 T.C.C Notes
Antique and vintage objects naturally carry signs of age and use acquired over the years. This piece is in excellent overall condition, with no cracks, crazing or chips. The original lid remains with the jar, and the “DOULTON & CO. LIMITED LAMBETH” maker’s mark is still clearly preserved on the lower body.
There are signs of previous use inside the jar. For this reason, we recommend using it for storage or display rather than for directly storing food or other consumables.
The stoneware retains the natural surface character and minor imperfections associated with its age and original method of manufacture. These are part of the character of an antique piece and should be appreciated as traces of its history. Please refer to the detailed photographs for the overall condition and any individual signs of age or use.
To help preserve the piece and prevent damage or deterioration, we do not recommend putting it in a dishwasher. If used to hold non-perishable items, gentle hand washing with a soft cloth and mild detergent is recommended, followed by thorough drying before storage.
The penguin figurine and any other objects shown alongside the jar are styling props for photography and are not included with the purchase. This listing is for the Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Jar only.
