Dean-Fibreglass Tape Measure, Brass

Dean was a British maker of measuring instruments, founded by Edward Dean in Newington, South London. From the mid-19th century, the company produced measuring tapes for practical use, including those used by tailors and dressmakers. The business later continued under the name Dean, Lerro & Co., before returning to the Dean name.

This example is fitted with a flexible and durable fibreglass tape and features a self-winding mechanism: once the tape has been pulled out for use, turning the handle winds it smoothly back into the brass case.

The initials ‘VMH’ are stamped near the beginning of the tape, a small personal detail that may suggest a former owner or user. The brass case has developed a naturally aged colour and surface wear over time, adding to its character as a practical object with a strong sense of period.

The tape measure remains fully functional and can be used as an everyday measuring tool, while also making an interesting vintage addition to a desk or workspace.
