Calling Card Case, 1913

Calling card cases were used during the Victorian and Edwardian periods to carry and store small cards bearing a person’s name and address. At the time, leaving a calling card after visiting someone’s home, particularly when they were unavailable, was an important part of social etiquette.

These cases were practical personal accessories, while also reflecting the owner’s taste and social standing. This case bears a Chester silver hallmark for 1913, while the maker’s mark SM&Co indicates the renowned London silver manufacturer Sampson Mordan & Co.

The company was well known for producing finely made practical objects, including pencils, writing accessories and a wide range of silver desk pieces. Particularly recognised for its mechanical pencils and desk accessories, the company’s tradition of precise craftsmanship is also evident in this beautifully made case. The surface is finished with exceptionally fine, subtle stripes, overlaid with delicate floral decoration that conveys a distinctly oriental influence.

The contrast between the fine linear texture and the small floral motifs creates a quiet yet richly detailed appearance. A vacant cartouche remains on the front, allowing a new owner to add their own initials and make the case uniquely personal. The interior is gilded and has been exceptionally well preserved, retaining a beautiful golden finish. A further silver hallmark is also present inside.

The case is spacious enough to comfortably hold approximately six credit cards, making it equally suitable for carrying business cards. There is something particularly appealing about an antique calling card case finding a new life as a modern card holder or business card case.

All vintage objects carry natural signs of use and the traces of time. This piece has received an initial polishing treatment using silver cleaner. Its naturally developed patina has been preserved rather than excessively removed. To help maintain the beauty and longevity of the silver, frequent or excessive use of silver cleaner is not recommended.

When not in use, please store it in a sealed zip-lock bag to minimise exposure to air. If necessary, gently polish it with a soft silver polishing cloth. The case opens and closes smoothly through its spring mechanism, rather than requiring pressure on a button. The opening and closing mechanism is currently in good working order.
