19세기 영국에서 제작된 앤티크 스톤웨어 잉크병입니다. Bristol의 대표적인 스톤웨어 제조업체인 Powell에서 제작된 것으로, 바닥에는 POWELL / BRISTOL 마크가 선명하게 남아 있습니다.
앤티크 스톤웨어에서 제조사의 impressed mark가 오랜 시간과 사용에도 선명하게 남아 있는 경우는 흔하지 않습니다. 여기에 실제 판매처를 보여주는 원래의 종이 라벨까지 함께 보존되어 있다는 점은 더욱 보기 드문 특징입니다. 하나의 작은 잉크병 안에 누가 만들었는지, 어디에서 판매되었는지를 보여주는 두 가지 기록이 함께 남아 있는 셈입니다.
크림빛을 띠는 매끄러운 표면은 Powell에서 발전시킨 Bristol glaze의 특징을 보여줍니다. 1835년경 개발된 Bristol glaze는 기존의 salt glaze와는 다른 방식으로 만들어진 것으로, 보다 매끄럽고 단단한 유리질 표면을 구현했습니다. 이후 영국의 실용적인 스톤웨어에 널리 사용되었으며, 이 잉크병 역시 당시 새롭게 발전하던 스톤웨어 제작 기술을 보여주는 작은 사례입니다.
앞면에는 Sold by W. Robinson, Castle Street, Liverpool 이라는 당시의 판매자 라벨이 그대로 남아 있습니다. Castle Street에서 서적과 문구류를 취급했던 W. Robinson을 통해 판매된 것으로 보이며, 이 작은 라벨을 통해 Bristol에서 제작된 병이 Liverpool의 상점으로 유통되었던 과정을 짐작해볼 수 있습니다. 단순한 제조사의 표식을 넘어, 이 물건이 실제로 어떤 상업적 환경을 거쳤는지를 보여주는 흥미로운 흔적입니다.
