A small record of the people and memories that once filled a life, gathered together in one book — an autograph book.
From the late 19th century into the early 20th century, autograph books were used in Britain and across Europe as keepsakes in which friends, family members and schoolmates could leave their names, short messages, poems or personal notes. Rather than simply collecting signatures, they served as more personal mementoes — a way of preserving the words and memories of the people around you in a single book.
On the first page of this example is the inscription “To Christine with Love From Dad Xmas 1925”. It appears to have been given to Christine by her father as a Christmas gift in 1925, while the rest of the book remains completely unused and blank. There is something particularly charming about being able to glimpse the intended recipient and occasion through just one short inscription.
Every page remains free from writing or markings, with subtle variations in colour throughout the paper. Soft pinks, pale blues and neutral tones appear naturally across the pages, creating a gentle change in colour as the book is opened and turned.
The page edges are finished with a gilt-edged detail, remarkably well preserved despite the passage of almost a century. The paper and binding also remain in good vintage condition overall.
Made to be gradually filled with the names and words of people encountered throughout a life, this book has instead remained almost entirely untouched for nearly a century. Apart from that single line written at Christmas in 1925, its pages have been left waiting to be filled.

The paper shows natural colour variation and minor signs of age. The cover is finished in faux leather, with the texture and colour naturally softened over time, adding to its vintage character. The word ‘AUTOGRAPH’ is gilt-decorated on the front cover, and the book remains in good overall condition.
