Spring Letter Balance, c.1930s
A vintage spring letter balance by M. Myers & Son, made in England and believed to date from the 1930s. Originally used to weigh letters and small postal items, it is a lovely example of the practical instruments found in British offices during the early 20th century.
The balance features a simple, functional design, with a silver-toned metal finish and a spring mechanism that reflects the ingenuity of everyday mechanical tools of the period. There is a certain charm in its straightforward construction, where form follows function, without the need for unnecessary detail or decoration.
What makes this piece particularly special is that it comes with its original box. Both have survived together over the decades, offering a glimpse into how the balance would have been kept and stored when new. Original packaging is always a lovely find with vintage pieces, adding to their appeal and making this one all the more interesting to collect.
Now largely replaced by digital weighing scales, instruments like this offer a tangible connection to a time when even everyday office tasks relied on simple mechanical ingenuity. The aged metal finish and honest signs of use give it a character that would be difficult to replicate, making it just as appealing as a decorative object as it once was as a working tool.
A lovely addition to a vintage desk or a collection of old British office wares, this is a piece that brings together understated design, everyday history and the added charm of its surviving original box.

𓉞 T.C.C Notes
The original box shows considerable wear from nearly a century of age, with signs of wear and handling throughout. The edges and surface bear various marks accumulated over time. Please refer to the photographs for a closer look at the overall condition and finer details of the box.
The spring mechanism is currently working well, retaining its original mechanical movement. The spring tension can also be adjusted by turning the adjustment knob on the body of the scale, adding to the appeal of its original mechanical design.
As with any vintage piece of this age, the metal surface shows natural variations in colour and signs of use. These details are part of its history as a working instrument, and have been left as they are to preserve the character and patina that only time can bring.
