Silver Combination Dip Pen & Pencil, c.1890

Believed to have been made in Britain between the late 19th and early 20th century, this antique silver combination pen and pencil brings together two writing instruments within a single, finely decorated body.

A dip pen extends from one end, while the other reveals a propelling pencil — an idea that feels surprisingly familiar today. Long before the modern multi-pen, 19th-century makers were already experimenting with combining different functions into a single writing instrument. Advances in metalworking and mechanical design led to the development of the propelling pencil, followed by a variety of combination writing instruments incorporating pens, pencils and, occasionally, other tools.

This piece uses a simple sliding mechanism to reveal either the pen nib or pencil from opposite ends. Scrolling foliate motifs and small floral details soften its mechanical form, reflecting a time when writing instruments were not simply practical objects, but small personal accessories designed to express individual taste. A softly coloured pink stone is set into the screw-fitting terminal, adding a subtle, jewellery-like detail to the silver body.

While no hallmarks are present, its double-ended construction and decorative style closely resemble British combination writing instruments from the late 19th century.
The pencil accommodates approx 1.5mm lead. More than a century later, there is something particularly charming about finding such a familiar idea within this small and intricate object.

When needed, gently polish with a soft silver polishing cloth.
