E.P.N.S Bud Vase

A pair of vintage silver-plated bud vases, designed to hold a single flower or a small cluster of delicate stems.

From the late 19th to the early 20th century, smaller vases became a beloved part of British tableware, used to bring a few flowers or a small posy into everyday spaces. Known as bud vases or posy vases, they could be placed on dining tables, side tables, or dressing tables, adding a quiet touch of nature to the room.

These pieces feature a softly spreading silhouette and beautifully scalloped rims. The gentle reflection of the silver-plated surface, combined with their delicate form, gives them an elegant presence despite their small scale.

The bases bear the ISG maker’s mark and EPNS mark. ISG is known as the mark of Israel Sigmund Greenberg & Co., a Birmingham manufacturer. EPNS stands for Electro Plated Nickel Silver, referring to a process in which a layer of silver is electroplated over a nickel silver base. Unlike sterling silver, EPNS offered the beauty and decorative quality of silver in a more accessible form and was widely used for domestic tableware and small objects.

Sold as a pair, the two vases create a particularly beautiful sense of proportion when displayed together. Their individual conditions vary, with one retaining more natural signs of age and surface character. Please refer to the accompanying photographs for detailed condition.

Designed originally for a single flower or small arrangement, they are equally lovely on a desk or bedside table, holding a seasonal sprig or a few delicate stems. Rather than filling a vase with an abundance of flowers, these small pieces allow the quiet presence of a single flower to take centre stage.

All vintage objects carry natural signs of use and traces of time accumulated over the years. This pair has received an initial polish using silver cleaner, while its naturally developed patina has been carefully preserved rather than excessively removed. To preserve the beauty and longevity of the pieces, frequent or excessive use of silver cleaner is not recommended. When not in use, please store them away from prolonged exposure to air. When needed, gently polish with a soft silver polishing cloth.
