An antique silver pencil extender, believed to date from around 1890 and made in England.

Designed to extend the length of a shortened pencil, this small writing accessory combines everyday practicality with the decorative appeal of a personal possession from the Victorian era.

Although the piece bears no silver hallmarks, the sliding ring used to insert and release the pencil is stamped with the maker’s name, S. Mordan & Co. Without hallmarks, however, the precise date of manufacture and silver purity cannot be officially verified.

S. Mordan & Co. was a distinguished British writing instrument maker that established its reputation through a patent relating to mechanical pencils in 1822. Particularly renowned for its finely engineered propelling pencils, the firm holds an important place in the history of Victorian writing instruments. Today, its antique pencils and writing accessories remain sought after by collectors for their intricate mechanisms and historical significance.

Pencil extenders were practical little inventions that allowed even the shortest pencils to be used to their full length. During this period, writing accessories were more than everyday stationery; they were also personal possessions that reflected individual taste and lifestyle. Pieces made in silver brought an added sense of refinement and decorative appeal to these otherwise functional objects.

The extender can be used with a standard pencil. Simply whittle down the upper end of the pencil slightly so that it fits into the holder, then twist it into place to secure it. Please refer to the pencil shown in the photographs for an example of the shape needed for use.

A small piece of writing history bearing the mark of a celebrated maker, this is a lovely addition for those drawn to Victorian stationery and antique silver accessories.

𓉞 T.C.C Notes
All vintage objects carry natural signs of use and traces of time accumulated over the years. This piece has received an initial polish using silver cleaner, while its naturally developed patina has been carefully preserved rather than excessively removed. To preserve the beauty and longevity of the piece, frequent or excessive use of silver cleaner is not recommended. When not in use, we recommend storing it in a sealed ziplock bag to minimise exposure to air. When needed, gently polish with a soft silver polishing cloth.
