Hand-Carved Horn Dog Head Whistle, 19th Century

Hunting was not simply a matter of one person walking through the countryside with a gun. In the 19th century, hunters often worked alongside their dogs, which could easily disappear from sight across open fields or through woodland. In such situations, whistles provided a practical way of communicating with them from a distance.

A short, sharp whistle could be used to signal a direction, call a dog back or indicate the handler’s position. Even when separated by distance and out of sight, the sound provided a simple way for hunter and dog to remain connected.

This small whistle takes the form of a dog’s head, evoking the close relationship between hunting and working dogs. Hand-carved from horn, it has been shaped and finished by hand, with the facial details carefully worked into the material to create its distinctive character.

Unlike something made to identical proportions by machine, the form is not perfectly symmetrical. One side may sit slightly higher than the other, while subtle variations can be seen across the surface. Rather than taking away from the piece, these small imperfections are part of its charm, preserving the individual character that comes with something made entirely by hand.

The whistle is currently in working order and has a small hole on one side for a thin cord. Designed to be worn or carried, it comes with an accompanying leather cord.

It can still be used as a working whistle today, while its unusual dog-head form and the naturally aged colour of the horn also make it a charming small antique object in its own right.
