An antique photograph box dating from the Edwardian period.
From the late 19th century into the early 20th century, photography was becoming an increasingly important way of recording personal lives and family memories. Unlike today, photographs were not digital images that could be stored indefinitely, but physical prints that were carefully kept and passed down over time.
As photography became more established, various cases and boxes were made to protect and store these precious prints. This piece is a charming example of that early photographic culture. Designed in the form of a small book, it opens to reveal a space for photographs, reflecting the way photographs were once treated as treasured personal keepsakes.
During the Edwardian period in particular, the development of portable cameras and more accessible photographic processes helped bring photography further into everyday life. This small box offers an interesting glimpse into the way people of the time stored and cared for their photographs and memories.
The exterior retains its ‘PHOTOGRAPHY’ gilt decoration, which remains remarkably clear. The leather has naturally worn and peeled in places over the years, with small scratches and other signs of use. These are natural traces of age and use, and form part of the character and charm of an antique leather object that has genuinely lived through its own history.
Today, it could be used to store not only old photographs, but also letters, postcards or other small keepsakes. It would also sit beautifully on a bookshelf or in a study as a piece of vintage history in its own right.
