A charming antique E.P.N.S. sugar caddy, made by Joseph Rodgers & Sons in Sheffield, dating from c.1858–1871.
The original E.P.N.S. mark remains to the base. Sugar caddies were once an essential part of the British tea table, used to hold sugar and placed alongside the teapot and other serving pieces. More than purely practical objects, they were part of the small details that made everyday dining and tea drinking feel a little more special. This piece has a lovely, softly rounded form, with delicate handles and a fluted lower section that give it a sense of movement and lightness.
The proportions are particularly pleasing, with the slender handles and neatly finished foot adding to its understated elegance. It is a practical piece of tableware, but one with enough character to stand beautifully on its own as a decorative object. The interior is gilded, and the warm golden tone showing through the silver creates a beautiful contrast.
Together, the silver and gold tones give the piece a soft, warm character, making it feel especially inviting. Originally intended as a sugar caddy, it is equally lovely used to hold a few small flowers or a seasonal sprig. Rather than filling it with a large arrangement, a few stems allow the shape of the vessel and its delicate handles to remain the focus. Left empty, it has a presence of its own.
