Dutch Silver Peppermint Case, 1874

In the 19th century, small cases like this were used to carry peppermint sweets or other little confections when out and about. These small, finely made cases offer a quiet glimpse into the everyday habits and tastes of the time. Small enough to fit in the palm of the hand, the fact that this little piece has survived for more than 150 years is perhaps what makes it most special.

The case retains its original Dutch silver hallmarks. In particular, the Minerva head mark, which resembles a small human face, is a well-known assay mark found on Dutch silver. Even within such tiny hallmarks, there is a record of the period, the silver-making system of the time, and the history this little object has travelled through.

A naturally developed patina has formed across the surface over many years, adding depth and warmth to the silver. Rather than the bright appearance of newly polished silver, this piece has the particular beauty of antique silver that has retained the traces left by time.

Originally made as a small case for carrying peppermint sweets, it can still be used today for sweets, or for keeping little everyday treasures such as jewellery, rings or hair ties.

If you wish to use it for sweets, as this is antique silver with its naturally developed patina preserved, we recommend placing a sheet of food-safe paper between the contents and the silver. As shown in the photographs, using a small piece of paper allows the silver to be protected while naturally continuing its original purpose and antique character.

All vintage objects naturally carry signs of age and previous use. This piece has received an initial polish using silver cleaner, while the naturally developed patina built up over many years has been preserved rather than excessively removed.

To help maintain its condition and longevity, frequent or excessive use of silver cleaner is not recommended. When not in use, please store the piece in a sealed zip bag to minimise contact with air. If necessary, gently polish with a soft silver polishing cloth.
