Cocker Spaniel Vesta Case, 1914

An antique silver Vesta case, hallmarked in Birmingham in 1913.

Vesta cases were small cases designed to carry and store matches, once a practical part of everyday life. At a time when matches were commonly carried in a pocket or handbag, these small, carefully made cases were not only useful objects but also a subtle expression of personal taste and individuality.

This example bears a Birmingham silver hallmark dating to 1913 and features a charming Cocker Spaniel in relief on the front. The beautifully modelled dog is the defining feature of the piece, giving what was originally a simple utilitarian object the character of a small silver objet. The base retains its original striking surface, showing how the case would have been used to light matches.

Although matches are no longer something we commonly carry, there is something rather comforting about lighting a candle on a quiet autumn or winter evening. Its naturally developed patina has been preserved rather than excessively removed. To help maintain the beauty and longevity of the silver, frequent or excessive use of silver cleaner is not recommended.

When not in use, please store it in a sealed zip-lock bag to minimise exposure to air. If necessary, gently polish it with a soft silver polishing cloth.
