Ebony(흑단)는 짙은 흑색과 깊은 광택, 단단하고 치밀한 조직으로 오랫동안 유럽의 고급 목공예에서 사랑받아온 소재입니다. 16세기 이후 유럽으로 수입되기 시작한 에보니는 희소성과 가공의 어려움 때문에 귀한 목재로 여겨졌으며, 르네상스와 바로크 시대에는 왕실과 귀족을 위한 캐비닛과 장식 가구에 사용되었습니다. 특히 17세기 프랑스와 네덜란드의 고급 가구에서는 에보니의 깊은 색감이 다른 목재와 대비를 이루며, 정교한 상감과 장식의 아름다움을 더욱 돋보이게 했습니다.
