영국 도싯주(Dorset) Sturminster Marshall에서 제작된 것으로 알려진 Nigel Pain의 빈티지 글래스 페이퍼웨이트입니다. 작지만 묵직한 유리덩어리 하나가 책상 위에 놓여 있습니다. 투명한 유리 안에는 오리 네 마리가 담겨 있고, 바닥면에는 A Nigel Pain Product, Sturminster Marshall, Dorset, England 라는 스티커가 남아 있습니다.

페이퍼웨이트는 원래 편지와 서류가 바람에 날아가지 않도록 눌러두는 작은 도구였습니다. 유리로 만들어진 페이퍼웨이트는 19세기 중반부터 장식적인 오브제로도 사랑받기 시작했는데, 실용적인 물건에 작은 장면과 아름다움을 더하고자 했던 당시의 취향을 보여줍니다.

이 오브제를 보고 있으면, 창문을 열어두고 선선한 바람이 불어오는 어느 오후가 떠오릅니다. 책상 위에는 아직 답장을 보내지 않은 편지와 읽다 만 서류가 놓여 있고, 바람이 불어오면 종이들이 살짝 들썩입니다. 그때 이 작은 오리 네 마리가 제 역할을 합니다. 종이가 날아가지 않도록 묵직하게 눌러주는 것. 그저 종이를 잡아주는 일인데, 어쩐지 그 역할을 오리들이 맡고 있다는 사실이 조금 귀엽습니다. 투명한 유리 안에 담긴 오리 네 마리는 마치 작은 장면을 멈춰놓은 듯합니다. 가까이 들여다보면 유리의 깊이와 무게감이 느껴지고, 책상 위에 놓아두면 그 자체로 하나의 작은 오브제가 됩니다. 한때는 누군가의 책상 위에서 편지와 서류를 눌러두었을 이 작은 페이퍼웨이트. 이제는 괜히 바람이 부는 날에 편지나 서류들을 꺼내놓고 싶어집니다.

세월의 흔적이 거의 느껴지지 않을 만큼 매우 뛰어난 빈티지 컨디션을 유지하고 있습니다. 유리 표면은 깨끗하고 선명하며, 전체적으로 특별히 눈에 띄는 스크래치나 손상 없이 잘 보관된 상태입니다. 유리 제품의 특성상 강한 충격이나 급격한 온도 변화에는 주의해 주세요. 먼지는 부드러운 마른 천으로 가볍게 닦아주시고, 바닥면의 라벨과 받침 부분은 물에 직접 닿지 않도록 관리해 주세요.
