사냥이 단순히 한 사람이 총을 들고 숲을 걷는 일이었던 것은 아닙니다. 19세기의 사냥에서는 사람과 사냥개가 함께 움직였고, 넓은 들판이나 숲속에서 개가 시야에서 사라지는 일도 흔했습니다. 그럴 때 사냥꾼이 사용한 것이 바로 호루라기였습니다.
멀리 떨어진 사냥개에게 방향을 알리거나 움직임을 멈추게 하고, 자신의 위치를 알려주는 소리. 짧고 날카로운 호루라기 소리는 사람과 개가 보이지 않는 거리에서도 서로를 연결하는 신호였습니다.
이 작은 호루라기는 그런 사냥 문화에서 영감을 받은 듯한 강아지 머리 형태로 만들어졌습니다. 동물의 뿔을 손으로 직접 깎아 형태를 만들고, 세부적인 얼굴의 표현까지 하나씩 다듬어 완성한 19세기의 수공예품입니다.
기계로 똑같이 만들어 낸 물건과 달리 완벽하게 대칭적이지 않습니다. 한쪽이 조금 더 높거나, 표면의 굴곡이 미세하게 다른 부분도 있습니다. 하지만 바로 그 불완전함이 이 피스의 매력입니다. 같은 방식으로 만들어진 또 다른 하나를 찾기 어려운, 손으로 만들어진 물건만의 개별적인 표정이 남아 있기 때문입니다.
호루라기는 현재 정상적으로 작동하며, 한쪽에는 얇은 끈을 끼울 수 있는 작은 구멍이 있습니다. 목에 걸거나 휴대할 수 있도록 만들어졌으며, 가죽 끈이 함께 포함된 피스입니다.
오늘날에도 실제 호루라기로 사용할 수 있으며, 강아지 형태의 독특한 조각과 오래된 뿔 특유의 색감 덕분에 하나의 작은 앤티크 오브제로도 충분히 매력적인 피스입니다.
