19세기 말에서 20세기 초 영국에서 사용되었을 것으로 보이는 Oak Letter Rack입니다.
오늘날에는 편지 한 통이 도착하는 일이 조금 특별하게 느껴지지만, 우편이 일상의 중요한 소통 수단이었던 당시 영국의 집과 사무실에서는 편지와 엽서, 신문과 각종 서류가 매일같이 오갔습니다.
Letter Rack은 그렇게 도착한 종이들을 한곳에 모아두고, 종류와 용도에 따라 정리해두기 위한 생활의 작은 도구였습니다. 책상 위나 서재, 현관과 같은 공간에 놓여 누군가에게 도착한 소식과 아직 보내지 않은 이야기를 잠시 머물게 하는 물건이기도 했습니다.
소개드리는 오브제는 짙게 에이징된 오크의 색감과 부드러운 곡선으로 이루어진 구조가 인상적입니다. 화려한 장식을 더하기보다 나무 자체의 결을 살린 디자인은 19세기 말에서 20세기 초 영국의 실용적인 가구 디자인과도 잘 어울립니다.
여러 겹으로 나뉜 앞쪽의 슬롯은 편지나 엽서, 작은 인쇄물들을 구분해 꽂아둘 수 있도록 만들어졌습니다. 각각의 칸에 종이가 하나씩 쌓여가면서, 그 집을 오가는 사람과 이야기의 흔적이 자연스럽게 남았을 것입니다.
100여 년 전에는 편지와 우편물을 담았을 이 오브제이지만, 오늘날에는 조금 다른 방식으로 사용할 수 있습니다.
좋아하는 엽서와 오래된 사진, 작은 카드나 종이 인쇄물을 꽂아두거나, 작업실에서는 스케치와 메모를, 현관에서는 자주 꺼내보는 작은 편지와 종이들을 담아두어도 좋습니다.
특히 이 물건의 아름다움은 비어 있을 때보다 무언가를 담고 있을 때 더욱 드러난다는 것에 있습니다.
한때는 누군가의 하루에 도착한 편지를 기다리던 자리였다면, 이제는 내가 고른 이미지와 문장, 오래 간직하고 싶은 작은 종이들을 위한 자리가 됩니다.
