1913년 체스터에서 제작된 앤티크 실버 콜링 카드 케이스입니다.
콜링 카드 케이스는 빅토리아 시대와 에드워디안 시대에 방문카드, 즉 자신의 이름과 주소가 적힌 작은 카드를 보관하고 휴대하기 위해 사용하던 케이스입니다. 당시에는 누군가의 집을 방문한 뒤 직접 만나지 못했을 때 방문카드를 남기거나, 사교적인 자리에서 서로의 카드를 주고받는 일이 중요한 예절 중 하나였습니다. 이러한 카드 케이스는 실용적인 소지품인 동시에 소유자의 취향과 사회적 지위를 보여주는 작은 액세서리이기도 했습니다.
이 케이스는 Chester 1913 실버 홀마크가 확인되며, 제조사 마크인 SM&Co는 런던의 저명한 실버 제조사 Sampson Mordan & Co를 나타냅니다. Sampson Mordan & Co는 연필과 필기용품을 비롯해 다양한 실버 소품을 제작한 회사로, 정교한 실용품을 만드는 것으로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 특히 이 회사는 기계식 연필과 여러 종류의 데스크 액세서리로도 유명했으며, 이러한 섬세한 제작 전통은 작은 실버 케이스에서도 잘 드러납니다.
표면에는 아주 잔잔한 스트라이프가 깔려 있고, 그 위로 동양적인 아름다움이 느껴지는 섬세한 꽃무늬가 세공되어 있습니다. 반복되는 선과 작은 꽃 장식이 은은한 대비를 이루며, 전체적으로 단정하면서도 깊이 있는 장식미를 보여줍니다.
앞면에는 새로운 소유자의 이니셜을 새길 수 있는 빈 공간이 남아 있어, 이름이나 이니셜을 더해 자신만의 케이스로 완성할 수 있습니다. 내부는 금도금(gilded)으로 마감되어 있으며, 오랜 시간이 지났음에도 매우 아름답고 완벽에 가까운 상태로 보존되어 있습니다. 내부에도 실버 홀마크가 남아 있어 제품의 제작 시기와 소재를 확인할 수 있습니다.
신용카드 약 6장이 넉넉하게 들어가는 크기로, 명함을 보관하고 휴대하는 용도로도 충분히 활용할 수 있습니다. 오래된 콜링 카드 케이스가 오늘날에는 카드 지갑이나 명함 케이스로 새로운 쓰임을 얻는다는 점도 이 오브제의 매력입니다.
