Flowers by Janet Harvey Kelman
Old books created to introduce children to the natural world often offer more than just their subject matter; they also give us a glimpse into the way nature was once observed, understood and shared with younger generations.
Janet Harvey Kelman’s Flowers is a charming children’s book devoted to the beauty and variety of flowers. At a time when the names and images of plants were not something that could simply be looked up at the touch of a screen, books such as this offered children a way to discover the natural world through careful observation.
The pages feature flowers reproduced in the distinctive style of early printed illustrations, giving the book a gentle, educational character. More than simply presenting flowers to the reader, it reflects a quieter approach to learning — encouraging children to look closely at the natural world around them.
For those drawn to botanical books, vintage illustration and the simple beauty of old printed matter, this is a lovely piece to keep on a bookshelf or display open to a favourite page, where it can sit almost like an original botanical print.
There is also a small personal detail preserved within the book. On the opening page is a handwritten inscription:
“To Jenny, June 4th 1949, with much love from Val.”
Dated 4 June 1949, the inscription records the book being given to Jenny by Val. A quiet trace of the book’s earlier life, it adds another layer to this charming little volume and the story it has carried with it over the years.
