English Stoneware Ink Bottle

19th-century English stoneware ink bottle, made by Powell, one of Bristol’s notable stoneware manufacturers. The impressed POWELL / BRISTOL mark remains clearly visible on the base.

What makes this piece particularly special is the survival of its original details. The maker’s mark remains remarkably clear despite its age and use, while the front retains its original paper retailer’s label reading Sold by W. Robinson, Castle Street, Liverpool. It is unusual to find both the maker and retailer so clearly identified on a small piece like this, offering a rare glimpse into where it was made and where it was sold.

The smooth, creamy surface is characteristic of Bristol glaze, a glazing technique developed at Powell’s Bristol pottery around 1835. Unlike traditional salt glaze, which was produced by introducing salt into the kiln during firing, Bristol glaze created a smoother, harder and more consistent surface. It later became widely used on practical stoneware across Britain, making this little bottle a lovely example of the evolving techniques of 19th-century stoneware production.

W. Robinson, Castle Street, Liverpool was a bookseller and stationer, suggesting that the bottle was sold through a shop dealing in books and writing supplies. This small detail gives the piece a connection to the everyday world of writing and stationery in Victorian Britain, beyond its origins at the Powell pottery in Bristol.

With its compact proportions and understated form, it would sit beautifully on a desk as a decorative object, or be paired with a dip pen to create a characterful vintage writing desk. More than simply a small stoneware vessel, its preserved maker’s mark and original retailer’s label make it a fascinating little record of 19th-century British manufacture and trade.
