Ebony Trinket Case

Ebony is a richly coloured, dense hardwood, prized for its deep black tones and natural lustre. It has long been valued in European decorative arts, particularly in fine furniture and small objects made for the home.

From the Renaissance and Baroque periods onwards, its rarity and the skill required to work it made ebony a material associated with luxury and refinement. By the 19th century, ebony continued to be used for fine furniture, writing accessories and small boxes, where its rich colour and smooth finish could be fully appreciated.

It was also during this period that ebonising — the process of staining other woods to resemble ebony — became increasingly popular. The enduring appeal of ebony lies not only in its appearance, but in the sense of quality and craftsmanship it brings to even the smallest of objects.

This little trinket case is a lovely example of that appeal. Its deep ebony colour and softly scalloped outline give it a particularly graceful, feminine character. The gently curved edges soften the otherwise simple form, while the dark wood gives the piece a quiet sense of depth and presence. The interior is lined with satin, creating a warm contrast to the dark ebony. Despite its age, the lining remains in remarkably good condition, adding to the overall charm of the piece.

Vintage wooden objects naturally develop their own colour, grain and surface character over time. This piece has received an initial wood polish, while the natural texture, colour and signs of use that have developed over the years have been preserved rather than excessively removed.

The opening and closing mechanism is in good working order. The marks and signs of wear across the surface are part of the story of the object, rather than simply imperfections, and we hope they can be appreciated as part of its natural character.

To help maintain the beauty of the wood, we recommend occasional oil polishing. Please avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and excessive moisture. As with any object that has been enjoyed over many years, some natural wear and signs of use are to be expected.
