Silver & Mother-of-Pearl Dip Pen, 1912

An antique sterling silver and mother-of-pearl dip pen, hallmarked in Birmingham in 1912.

Made from silver and mother-of-pearl, the pen combines the soft lustre and natural variation of mother-of-pearl with the understated character of silver. A Birmingham silver hallmark is present on the handle, confirming its place and date of assay.

A dip pen is designed to be dipped directly into an inkwell before writing, offering a slower and more tactile writing experience than the fountain pens we use today. Even when simply displayed on a desk, it has the presence of a small antique writing instrument.

The original nib is included with the pen, but it has developed a crack over time and will need to be replaced before the pen can be used. The nib is a replaceable component, so a new nib can be fitted if you wish to use the pen for writing.

Vintage objects naturally carry signs of age and use accumulated over time. The silver has been given an initial polish using silver cleaner, while the natural patina developed over the years has been preserved rather than excessively removed.

To maintain the finish and condition of the silver, frequent or excessive use of silver cleaner is not recommended. When not in use, we recommend storing the pen in an airtight zip-lock bag to minimise exposure to air. If needed, gently polish with a soft silver polishing cloth.

The original nib is included but is cracked and requires replacement before use.
